What Can Fruit Flies Teach Us About Cancer?

Thursday, July 7, 2011 – 7 p.m. – The Harmon Brewery

Because we share about two-thirds of our genes with the humble fruit fly, scientists can pinpoint genes that contribute to human cancer by studying genes in these tiny insects.

Join the University of Puget Sound’s Leslie Saucedo, PhD, to explore how she uses fruit flies to help decode the genetics of rampant cell growth, a defining feature of cancer.

The Harmon Brewery is located in downtown Tacoma at 1938 Pacific Avenue.

Science Cafés bring scientists face-to-face with the general public in the comfortable, lively atmosphere of a neighborhood café or pub.

The evening begins with a brief presentation by a scientist, which kicks off an extended discussion session between the scientist and audience.

Previous cafés have covered climate science, evolution and religion, robotics, and health care, just to name a few.

All Science Cafés are free to the public, open to all ages and no science background is required! Learn More
