People in state high-risk insurance plans often feel left behind
The federal health law set up new plans that are cheaper and more comprehensive than the older ones run by states but consumers need to go without insurance for six months to qualify.

“If you live in a high-poverty area, your risk of early death rises substantially,” one expert said. “In many cases your ZIP code is more important than your genetic code.”

A large study found that patients in certain large chain facilities are significantly more likely to die than those treated elsewhere.
Mortality was also higher in for-profit than non-profit dialysis centers.
When they don’t have to pay a health insurance deductible, people are more likely to get screened for conditions like cancer and high cholesterol–but the increase is modest.
“Normal daily activity seems to be the best way for patients with low-back pain to get better,” says study author.
