Although tick-borne diseases are rare in Washington, they do occur and its important to protect yourself, your family and your pets during the spring, summer and fall, Washington State Department of Health officials warn.

As of April 28th, 1,132 cases of whooping cough have been reported in the state. The epidemic is on pace for as many as 3,000 cases this year, health officials said.

Of the 103 who received prescriptions last year, 94 are known to have died. Seventy of these died after taking the medication. Nineteen died without taking the medication. In five deaths, it is not known whether or not they took the medication.

More than one in ten U.S. babies born prematurely

U.S. has a higher rate of babies born too early than more than 125 other countries, including Rwanda, Uzbekistan, China and Latvia, according a new report produced by 50 organizations, including the Global Alliance to Prevent Prematurity and Stillbirth (GAPPS), an initiative of Seattle Children’s.

Laws in more than half the states permit insurers to deny payment for medical services related to alcohol or drug use. Faced with the prospect of not getting paid for care, some ER personnel sidestep the problem by simply not testing patients’ blood or urine for alcohol.
