Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason (BRI) has promoted Homer W. Lane Jr. to executive director of BRI. He will also serve as vice president for research at Virginia Mason Medical Center. He succeeds Jack Nagan, JD, who retired June 30.
Lane will lead all of BRI’s business operations including finances, grants and contracts, human resources, information technology, communications, intellectual property development, the clinical research program, facilities and administrative services.
He is also responsible for the overall coordination and oversight of research activities at VMMC.
Benaroya Research Institute
Benaroya Research Institute, founded in 1956, specializes in research into immune system and autoimmune disease, including type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis.
The Institute employs more than 250 physicians, scientists, researchers and staff with a research volume of more than $35 million in 2011, including grants from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Defense, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and the American Heart Association.

Lane joined BRI in 2011 as BRI chief financial officer and chief administrative officer.
Lane previously served for 12 years as chief financial officer for the Marine Biological Laboratory, a research and educational institution based in Woods Hole, Mass.
Prior to that, he spent more than two decades in the banking industry and held positions in investment banking, treasury, global services and commercial lending areas.
Lane received an MBA and a BS in civil engineering from Columbia University. He currently serves as vice president for the Association of Independent Research Institutes (AIRI).
