Despite the world economic crisis, funding for global health from both public and private donors continues to rise, albeit more slowly, according to a report by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington in Seattle.

But aid is not necessarily going where the need is greatest, the report finds.

The website allows users to sort the hospitals by county, alphabetically and from highest to lowest or lowest to highest infection rates and to compare local hospital rates with the averages for Washington State, the nation and the top 10 percent hospitals nationwide.

That’s what President Obama should tell Congressional Republicans, says Princeton health economist Uwe E. Reinhardt.

His logic: The GOP would have to come up with its own solutions to the health cost crisis, many of which, he wagers, would look much like parts of the current law.

“I think it would be a healthy thing,” he says.
