State O.K.s Swedish-Stevens affiliation

The Washington State Department of Health has granted a certificate of need allowing Swedish Medical Center to lease and operate Steven Hospital in Edmonds, which owned by Public Hospital District #2 of Snohomish County.

“By combining their assets and talents, Stevens and Swedish will be able to better manage costs, provide greater value to patients by improving care-delivery models, and reduce waste,” Swedish said in a statement announcing the Department of Health’s decision.

“Under the 30-year arrangement, the District will receive monthly lease payments of at least $600,000,” the hospital said. ”Current Stevens administrators and staff will remain in place and new employees will be added as services expand.”

Swedish will make day-to-day operations decisions for the facility and the Hospital District Board of Commissioners will be consulted on major issues, the hospital said.

Stevens is licensed for 217 beds and has 1,200+ employees and more than 400 physicians with privileges.

Swedish is Greater Seattle’s largest non-profit health-care provider with 1,245 licensed beds, has three hospital campuses in Seattle (First Hill, Cherry Hill and Ballard) and a fourth under construction in Issaquah.

Swedish currently employs 7,360 people system-wide, 410 of which are physicians. The system’s active medical staff is comprised of 1,550 physicians, most of which are private practitioners.

The new agreement will go into effect September 1st, when the Stevens will officially be renamed Swedish/Edmonds.
