Upcoming talks at Gilda’s Club Seattle
Gilda’s Club is a non-profit group that provides meeting places where men, women and children living with cancer and their families and friends join with others to build emotional, social and educational support as a supplement to medical care.
The club’s services are free and include support and networking groups, lectures, workshops and social events in a nonresidential, homelike setting.
The club is named in honor of Gilda Susan Radner was an American comedienne and actress, best known for her years as a cast member of Saturday Night Live.
Radner, who died at 42 of ovarian cancer, helped raise the public’s awareness of the disease and the need for improved detection and treatment.
- Talks are scheduled on Thursday nights at 7:00 p.m and run to 8:30 p.m.
- Light refreshments available at 6:45.
- The talks are free, but please RSVP 24+ hours in advance at www.gildasclubseattle.org or by calling 206-709-1400.
- Children may play at Noogieland with 48+ hour advance notice.

Barbara Flye, the Senior Health Policy advisor to Washington Insurance Commissioner, Mike Kreidler, will provide an overview of the new health care reform law, and will help you understand how it relates to coverage for people with cancer.
Also, you will find out what to do and where to turn when you have problems with your coverage, and more. Bring your questions.
9/16/10 When Are We Going to Cure Cancer?
Dr. Mac Cheever, Director of Solid Tumor Research for the Fred Hutchinson/University of Washington Cancer Consortium, will discuss this topic as well as the clinical trials process necessary to identify and develop effective therapies and cures.
He’ll also talk about the interrelated desire of patients to receive the best new therapies and their contrasting worry about being a research “guinea pig”.
He’ll spotlight the history of cancer research in Seattle, the process of testing new therapies in patients and the current availability of innovative therapies in Seattle.
9/23/10 Cancer Chemotherapies and the Health of Your Bones
Dr. Christopher Shuhart, Medical Director of the Swedish Bone Health and Osteoporosis Program explores the present understanding of cancer chemotherapy’s impact on bone health and fracture risk and will review bone health evaluation and potential treatment for those at risk.
We will also explore the developing literature on skeletal health of long-term cancer survivors.
9/30/10 Late Effects After Cancer Therapy
Dr. Scott Baker, director of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center Survivorship Program, shares important information about long term medical issues that cancer survivors may face following treatment.
