Seattle Children’s in 2013

Seattle Children’s today released a rendering showing what the hospital campus may look like in 2013 after completion of the first phase of the medical center’s planned four-phase expansion, which will expand the hospital’s capacity from 250 to 600 beds over the next 20 years.

The first phase will add 60 to 80 inpatient beds.

The first phase of the expansion will also includes: space for a kitchen, an improved emergency department and, possibly, a new helicopter-landing pad.

The new patient rooms will be designed as eight-room “neighborhoods”, the hospital said, with transparent slider doors that provide visibility for families and their care team – ensuring better communication and care coordination.”

Features include:

  • sleeper sofas,
  • privacy curtains,
  • bathrooms with showers, and
  • care team “porches” – alcoves outside patient rooms that provide closer access for the care team. Supplies on carts can be wheeled into cupboards at each porch, for easy access.
