Red Cross recruiting ReserveCorps volunteers to help with local flood response

November 2, 2009 | By More

Red Cross LogoThe local chapter of the American Red Cross is seeking volunteers to be trained to staff the agency’s shelters in the event of local flooding.

The volunteers will be trained to be members of the Red Cross’s ReserveCorps, part of the American Red Cross’ Ready When the Time Comes (RWTC) program, which prepares teams of “reserve” Red Cross volunteers to be ready to help during a local, large-scale disaster.

This year, flooding risk is especially high in the Green River Valley because weakening of the Howard Hanson Dam will prevent the U.S. Army Corps. of Engineers from capturing as much water behind the dam as it usually does during the flood season.

As a result, many downstream homes and businesses that usually escape flood during heavy rains may see flooding, including parts of Auburn, Kent, Renton, South Seattle and Tukwila.

For more information about becoming a ReserveCorps please visit Seattle Red Cross web site at www.seattleredcross.org or call (206) 726- 3566 or (360) 377-3761.
Volunteers must submit an online application before attending the free, day-long shelter training. A free background check will be part of the training. ReserveCorps shelter classes will be held on November 14 and December 5, 2009.
