Lung Cancer: Recent advances in early diagnosis and treatment
Swedish to Host Free Program on Recent Advances in Early Lung Cancer Diagnosis, Therapy
SEATTLE, Oct. 26, 2009 – In light of November being Lung Cancer Awareness Month and a growing incidence of the disease even among non-smokers, a distinguished panel of Swedish Cancer Institute-affiliated lung-cancer specialists is hosting a free program on advances in early diagnosis of and therapy for the disease.
It will take place Thursday, Nov. 19 from 7-8:30 p.m. in Glaser Auditorium on the first floor of Swedish/First Hill (747 Broadway, Seattle).
According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer (both small cell and non-small cell) is the leading cause of cancer deaths for both men and women. In fact, more people die of lung cancer than of colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined. In 2009, more than 219,000 new cases of lung cancer and more than 159,000 deaths will occur as a result of the disease.
Topics and speakers will include:
- The new lung cancer staging system for both SCLC (small cell lung cancer) and NSCLC (non-small cell lung cancer) – Alex Farivar, M.D.
- Lung cancer screening and management of solitary pulmonary nodule – Ralph Aye, M.D.
