Influenza: a primer

October 12, 2009 | By More

Globe floating in airWashington Global Health Alliance invites you to its Global Health 101 session on influenza:

Influenza: here today, gone tomorrow?

If you hesitate to attend WGHA events due to a lack of global health knowledge, Seattle Biomedical Research Institute’s Global Health 101 provides a perfect primer for your understanding of global health concepts and vocabulary.

Influenza has received a lot of media attention recently, but questions about the effectiveness of a vaccine, how a virus can mutate and how you can prevent receiving the virus are still at the top of all of our minds.

Ask questions from a panel of experts who’ve made it their job to understand the flu. Every question is welcome.

Learn the basics of flu virus and vaccines from the following expert panelists:

  • Alan Aderem, PhD, will be on hand to discuss different types of flu and various approaches to vaccine development. Dr. Aderem is the director of the Institute for Systems Biology.
  • Janet Englund, MD, will answer questions about how you and your family can prepare for, and protect against, the flu. Dr. Englund is a leading expert on influenza at Seattle Children’s Hospital.
  • Helen Horton, PhD, will tell you what a virus is, how it mutates, and how scientists look for vaccine targets. Dr. Horton is a principal investigator for SBRI’s Viral Vaccine Program.
  • Todd Patrick, SBRI Board of Trustees Chair, will moderate the panel. As former president and COO of ID Biomedical, Patrick has a wealth of knowledge in vaccine development.

A special tour of SBRI’s labs will follow the panel discussion.
