Hospice volunteers needed in King and Snohomish counties
Group Health is seeking hospice volunteers with weekday availability in Seattle, East King and Snohomish counties.
Hospice volunteers stay with terminally ill patients in their homes while caregivers take needed breaks, visit patients in nursing homes and other facilities, assist with errands, transportation and other practical tasks.
The next training sessions will be held Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, September 21, 22, and 23 in Bellevue. Interested individuals are encouraged to submit an application before Wednesday, September 9.

Don’t volunteer unless the hospice supports volunteer boundaries.
All six volunteers I have known have quit due to the relentless demands of family for help outside the boundaries of the volunteer role.
Volunteers are repeatedly asked by families to perform direct care (which they are not trained for) and to administer medications (hellllllo! LIABILITY) when that is not the position they were recruited for. Hospice does not support volunteers placed in these uncomfortable positions. They do not allocate their resources well, asking volunteers to cover shifts which result in significant commutes and expenses rather than finding a volunteer nearby. (You pay your own gas). Last thing you need is to drive across the city only to be asked to help with direct care only to have to refuse and drive home, or ot assist and face the threat of a lawsuit should someone fall or something happen.
Hospice administrators need to clean this up at more than the lip-service level before asking for willing volunteers.
