Local market chain recalls peanut products due to Salmonella concerns

central-market-logoTown & Country Markets, which operates the Ballard Market, the Greenwood Market, and the Town & Country Market on Bainbridge Island, as well as the Central Markets in Shoreline, Mill Creek, and Poulsbo is recalling specific lots of peanut products because of concerns about potential Salmonella contamination.

The recalled products include peanuts products and trail mixes from bulk bins sold between January 1, 2007 and February 13, 2009 and some lots of self-grind peanut butter sold between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2008.

The products are being recalled because they contain peanuts from the Peanut Corporation of America, whose facilities have been identified by federal investigators as the source of a nationwide Salmonella outbreak that has sickened nearly 700 people in 45 states including 22 in Washington state.

Town & Country Markets Recalls Select Peanuts, Peanut Products, and Self-Serve Grind Peanut Butters Because of Possible Health Risk

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – March 5, 2009 – Town & Country Markets, dba: Central Market of Seattle, Washington is recalling six peanut and peanut containing products, plus self-serve grind Peanut Butter due to potential Salmonella contamination. 

The peanut products and self-grind peanut butter made from them were manufactured using peanut products recalled by Peanut Corporation of American because they may be contaminated with Salmonella.  

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Healthy persons infected with Salmonellaoften experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis. 

The peanut products were delivered to Town & Country Markets, dba: Central Market stores by GloryBee Foods, Inc. and stocked in the bulk foods section at each of their six locations

No known illnesses have been reported to date in connection with any of these products. 

The recall was initiated after it was determined that the peanut products received were manufactured by Peanut Corporation of America, Plainview, TX.  Town & Country Markets has informed the FDA of its actions and is fully cooperating with the Agency.
