Tacoma’s Brown & Haley candy maker recalls peanut products due to Salmonella concerns

peanut-roca Tacoma candy maker Brown & Haley is recalling some lots of its Honey Roasted Peanut ROCA Buttercrunch Toffee and Peanut Delights because they contain peanuts from Peanut Corporation of America, whose plant has been linked to the Salmonella outbreak that has sickened 666 people in the U.S. and Canada, including 22 in Washington state.

The Honey Roasted Peanut ROCA Buttercrunch Toffee was distributed to retail stores nationwide and sold directly to consumers via the internet.

Peanut Delights were sold directly to consumers at Brown & Haley’s outlet stores in Tacoma, WA and Fife, WA.

There have been no reported illnesses linked to these products, the company said.

Although the outbreak appears to be on the wane, recalls continue to be issued for a wide variety products.

Brown & Haley Voluntarily Recalls Honey Roasted Peanut ROCA Buttercrunch Toffee and Peanut Delights Products Because of Possible Health Risk

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – February 27, 2009 — Brown & Haley announced today that it is taking the precautionary measure of voluntarily recalling Honey Roasted Peanut ROCA Buttercrunch Toffee and Peanut Delights. These products contain peanuts obtained from the Plainview, Texas plant of Peanut Corporation of America (PCA).

These peanuts have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

Honey Roasted Peanut ROCA Buttercrunch Toffee was distributed to retail stores nationwide and sold directly to consumers via the internet. Peanut Delights were sold directly to consumers at Brown & Haley’s outlet stores in Tacoma, WA and Fife, WA.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with these products. No other types, varieties or flavors of Brown & Haley products are being recalled. When Brown & Haley distributes new Honey Roasted Peanut ROCA Buttercrunch Toffee NOT affected by this recall, it will contain “99” followed by a 7 digit lot code (e.g., 99 N25N715). Brown & Haley has informed FDA of its actions and is fully cooperating with the Agency.

Brown & Haley is committed to producing only the highest quality products, and is taking this action out of an abundance of caution in the interests of consumer protection.

Consumers should not consume the recalled products and should discard any product they have. Consumers wishing a refund are asked to save the UPC code label from the product package and mail it, along with name, mailing address, and store where purchased to:
