Regence Foundation gives $135,500 grant to distance learning program to train rural nurses
The Regence Foundation will give a $135,000 grant to support a program that allows rural residents to train for nursing careers without having to leave their communities.
The program is run by the Western Washington Area Health Education Center, a non-profit agency that works to promote equity of and access to health care for under-served rural and urban populations in western Washington.
“The program is geared toward people already working in the health care field,” the Foundation said in its release announcing the grant. “Students are sponsored by their employer, often in exchange for agreeing to stay with that employer for several years after earning their degree.”
The coursework includes a mix of online education and clinical training in local health care facilities.
- Rural health care employers already participating in the program include:
- Klickitat Valley Health in Goldendale
- Ferry County Memorial Hospital in Republic
- Jefferson Healthcare in Port Townsend
- Morton General Hospital in Morton
