Three Washington companies recall peanut products due to concerns about Salmonella contamination

salmonella on cultured human cellsThree Washington companies have issued recalls of peanut products due to concerns that they might be contaminated with the bacterium Salmonella.

All the companies obtained peanut products from the Peanut Corporation of America, whose plant in Blakely, Georgia has been identified with an Salmonella outbreak that has sickened more than 640 people nationwide and has been linked to eight deaths.

The companies are:

  • Biogenesis Nutraceuticals, Inc. of Mill Creek, which is recalling specific lots of its All Diabetone gluco:support peanut butter chocolate bars  
  • Nature’s World of Sumner, which is recalling specific lots of its NW Delights Trail Mixes: Dark Olympic Classic; Nooksack; Olympia; Pacific Crest; San Juan; and Cascade.

  • Innova Nutrition of Mill Creek, which is recalling specific lots of its Diabeteze Bars, which were distributed through Costco in Washington and Oregon.  

No known illnesses have been linked to these products, the companies say.

Biogenesis Nutraceuticals Inc. Announces Nationwide Recall of Diabetone Gluco:Support Peanut Butter Chocolate Bars Because of Possible Health Risk

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE –Mill Creek, WA — February 18, 2009 — BioGenesis Nutraceuticals Inc. of Mill Creek, WA is recalling All Diabetone gluco:support peanut butter chocolate bars with manufacture dates of May 08 and June 08, because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.  

The Diabetone gluco:support peanut butter chocolate bars were manufactured using peanut products recalled by Peanut Corporation of American because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

In rare circumstances, infection withSalmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The Diabetone gluco:support peanut butter chocolate bar was distributed nationally through natural health care providers.

The Diabetone gluco:support peanut butter chocolate 1.5 oz bars were sold in 15 count boxes and have manufacture dates printed on the individual bar labels. There is no code on the box.

The manufacture dates subject to recall are MFG08MAY08 Fu1 and MFG12JUN08.  There is no UPC for this product.

No known illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the Diabetone gluco:support peanut butter chocolate bars. 

The recall was initiated after it was determined that the peanut product received was manufactured by Peanut Corporation of America’s Georgia Plant.  BioGenesis Nutraceuticals Inc. has informed FDA of its actions and is fully cooperating with the Agency.

Consumers who have purchased Diabetone gluco:support peanut butter chocolate bars are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Nature’s World Recalls NW Delights Trail Mixes Because Of Possible Health Risk

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE –Sumner, WA — January 29, 2009 — Natures World of Sumner, WA is recalling NW Delights Trail Mixes: Dark Olympic Classic; Nooksack; Olympia; Pacific Crest; San Juan; and Cascade because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

The products were manufactured using peanut products recalled by Peanut Corporation of American because they may be contaminated with Salmonella

Products were sold through retail stores in Alaska, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, California and Hawaii. All products were sold before July 1, 2008.

Innova Nutrition Recalls Certain Diabeteze Bars Because Of Possible Health Risk

The product was manufactured using peanut products recalled by Peanut Corporation of American because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

Diabeteze chocolate peanut butter bars were distributed in northwest Costco warehouses in Washington and Oregon.

The bars are sold in boxes of 12/1.5oz bars with blue packaging. The UPC code is 8 50540 00112 4. Only bars with the best buy dates of 12/14/08, 12/19/08, and 12/20/08 are affected.

No known illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this product. The recall was initiated after it was determined that the peanut pieces in the bar were manufactured by Peanut Corporation of America’s Georgia Plant. Innova Nutrition has informed FDA of its actions and is fully cooperating with the Agency.
