The Association of Washington Business has awarded Valley Medical Center’s Safety Team a “Better Workplace Award” for reducing worker’s compensation injuries, adopting innovative safe patient handling techniques, and improving its return to work strategies.

The safe patient handling initiative included the development of  ”Lift Teams” that specializes in helping move patients. The members of these teams have Bachelor’s degrees in exercise science and ergonomics.

Such teams have been shown to reduce the risk of low back injuries, one of the most common workplace injuries affecting hospital workers. The Center also purchased portable lifts and patient handling devices to make it easier for workers to move patients safely.
