Melamine fears lead to cookie recall
The maker of Wonderfarm biscuits is recalling several varieties of its cookies because of concerns they may be contaminated with melamine.
Melamine is a nitrogen-containing compound used for a variety of industrial uses. It is not allowed in food in the U.S.A.
Recently, tens of thousands of infants in China have been poisoned after drinking infant formula containing melamine. The poisonings have resulted in serious illnesses and several deaths.
Investigators believe melamine had been added to milk used in the formula because the nitrogen in the chemical can make the milk appear to testers that the milk contains more protein than it does.
Melamine has since been found in other food products manufactured in China.
Wonderfarm is manufactured by Interfood Shareholding Company, which is based in Vietnam
