Family Health insurance premiums now more than $12,000 a year

September 30, 2008 | By More

Premiums for employer-sponsored health insurance are now $12,680 a year, more than double what the coverage cost in 1999, according to a survey conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Health Research & Educational Trust.

The doubling of health-care premiums outstripped general inflation, which only rose 29 percent over the same period. Workers wages rose as well over the decade, but only 34 percent—not enough to keep pace with the more than two-fold increase in the cost of health insurance.

At the same time, as the price of premiums have risen, actual coverage has decreased with more workers being enrolled in high-deductible plans that provide fewer benefits.

On average workers now pay $3,354 a year out-of-pocket to cover their health-care costs.
